Hey guys! I'm finally putting an end to my procrastination! I recently finished reading the book of my choice, "Out of my Mind" by Sharon Draper. It was a great book and quite eye opening. I've learned not to take my gift of having a voice for granted or my ability to walk and have motor control. We don't realize how blessed we are to have that! We should take time to thank God for that everyday, and that he chose for us to be this way. <3
The book is about a girl named Melody who has a photographic memory, but is handicapped. She knows hundreds of thousands words, but never in her eleven years has she spoken a single one. She's basically a genius trapped in a handicapped body. All she wants is to be accepted and to be like normal kids. Her school adds a new program where they mix the "Special Ed" kids with the "normal kids" in the classes, similar to what our school does (I'm very proud of that)! Melody finds that technology can be very dandy and help her fit in and achieve her goals. This story should inspire everyone who reads it to be the best they can be and to aim high!
The girl in this story, Melody has the same disease as Stephen Hawking, which is Lue Gehrig's disease. This disease causes your muscles to lose strength because they are incapable of getting the necessary nourishment they need. Also, this disease damages your neurons in your brain and spinal cord, mainly causing you the loss of speech. In most cases people don't survive very long after diagnosis, which is why Melody (even though she is a fictional character) is such an inspiration along with Stephen Hawking.
I realized that just because a person is classified as "Special Ed" you shouldn't underestimate them. You may never know what it's like not to be able to communicate, to voice your opinion, just to walk around, and not to have friends...
The next book I plan on reading is "The Brooklyn Nine" because I'm really missing my baseball boys (the season is over, they placed 3rd in the league!) I hope everyone has had a good summer so far, and that they've learned something about life. I certainly have! So on that note, go out read, make a friend, believe in yourself, and learn something!(:
